An earlier version of this list included noted Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller. After reflecting on her role in excluding black freedmen from the Cherokee Nation, however, we’ve opted to take her off, as it undermines the intersectionality that so many others on this list have emphasized in their work.
